Designing an embassy is perceived as condensing a whole nation into one architectural statement.
The building is a physical representation of the link between the two countries: Austria and Lebanon in addition to its symbolic status as being an element of identification with the home country for the Lebanese living in Vienna.
After investigation of the Austrian culture through collages, natural elements, mainly water, and mountains, my main focus is a linking concept. While Austria is a landlocked country with a main river and mountains (the Danube and the Alps)passing through it, Lebanon has its southern frontier facing the Mediterranean sea and has two mountain chains parallel to the sea to the east.
Following the concept of layering and being restricted by the building codes in Vienna in terms of footprint and setback, I divided my lot into three strips using a water channel as a safety strategy in order to block the accessibility while keeping the visual continuity through the different layers consisting of the consulate, the embassy, and the ambassador’s house.
