The Story

During October 2019 uprising in Lebanon, a group of Lebanese students and young professionals partnered with Datawheel and Cesar Hidalgo to deploy a digital participation platform to be part of the Opencracia project.

We noticed that there were many demands raised in the streets with no real structure or priorities set to have a better direction of how the implementation of change could happen.

Research

We started by collecting the demands that people are raising by looking into protesters' banners, online articles, and social media posts.

We collected 90 demands under 9 categories: Health, Justice, City/Citizen, Environment, Security, Education, Family/Personal, Economy, and Government.

How might we help the people prioritize their demands from the government?

Users: Lebanese Citizens and Diaspora

As we are launching a platform to reflect people's voice, a wide range of personas were to be taken into account

Process.

First Iteration

We based the first iteration on the previous platform built for Chilecracia and we adapted the content to the Lebanese context by integrating the demands and the use of both English and Arabic languages simultaneously.

Media Coverage

Within our outreach strategy, we had media coverage Nationally (Agenda Culturel,  MTV, etc...) and internationally (Le Figaro, Le Commerce du Levant, Diario Concepción, etc...)  in addition to celebrities sharing the platform on social media.

Outreach & Analytics

Since we were seeking to engage as many users as possible, we conducted a  broad outreach using facebook and whatsapp diaspora groups around the world to attract traffic to the platform.

Key Takeaways

  1. Digital Participation tools are needed to structure people's ideas to better communicate them with policymakers.

  2. Incentivizing people to share their priorities and hearing their feedback on ways of enhancing the digital experience was at the core of the success of this project.
